There were multiple ideas, but I liked the idea of having a Parent Potluck. Families could be asked to bring in a favorite dish or a cultural dish to share. When parents come for conferences, the dishes would be shared.
One thing I like to do is keep notes on my students as the quarter goes along. I have a file folder system where I put stuff in each child's folder that I want to show at conferences. If I know there is a topic that could get a little "heated" than I make sure I have the "data" to back up the discussion.
An easy way to keep notes on kids is to print their names on a sheet of labels. Then, when you need to record something, record it on the label. When you have time, put the label in the child's folder.
Over the years, the "family" has changed. There are many different family situations that we need to be aware of. It is a good idea to make additional copies of paperwork (report card, student self-evaluation) if the child spends time in more than one household. In this way, you are making sure that both parents are informed of the child's progress.
-Something that we are talking about trying is having a meal served at our parent teacher conferences. So if they come to see they teacher they get like a ticket to go and eat. We usually have great turnouts at our PTO nights and they serve a meal. This is something we would like to try to boost our attendance at conferences. -Amanda Achenbach
